Yesterday’s announcement by the First Minister on the Scottish Government’s Route Map for coming out of the coronavirus crisis did not include any immediate changes to the rules on operating and attending gyms. As things stand, gyms will not be allowed to re-open until we reach Phase 3 of the Route Map – and while no definite date is given for this, it will almost certainly not be before July.
I have spent the past few weeks preparing the gym for a partial re-opening, in which members could book an individual workout session and up to four members at a time could exercise while maintaining social distance. The gym has been deep-cleaned and partially redecorated, and members would work out in their own designated space with exclusive use of equipment. This would be supported by separate entrance and exit routes and a continuous cleaning and sanitising programme.
I was hoping to announce the launch of this system today in this newsletter, and explain more fully how the scheme will work. But the news from Holyrood means that this will now have to wait until Phase 3 of the route map is officially announced. Having talked to many members about this, I know how keen people are to get back to the gym and resume their normal exercise routines, and I am sorry to have to inform you of this disappointing delay.
Having said that, I am currently seeking specific official guidance on the issue of size. With around 100 members currently, The Club is a small gym, much smaller than any of the national chains operating locally. And we are proposing to have no more than four people working out at any one time. This may mean that the arrangement we propose could be approved as safe. I will keep you in touch with developments on this matter.
I want to thank all members for continuing to support The Club during this difficult time. Your support means, literally, everything. Please be assured that The Club will continue to do all it can to help you get back to the gym as soon as legally and practically possible. Our online classes and sessions with Personal Trainers will continue to operate, and I hope you will make the most of these. As I’m sure you agree, maintaining fitness and morale is so important in these challenging times.
Please drop me an email or give me a call to let me know your thoughts on the above, or simply to say hi and tell me how you are coping. I hope to see you soon, and of course I will let you know as soon as our planned partial re-opening becomes possible.
In the meantime, thank you once again for your patience and your amazing support.
